We have just added to our photo gallery, a Malibu Stealth 14 equipped with LED adjustable cockpit lighting, on-board battery charging capability, live-well pump system with adjustable aerator, underwater live-well lighting, Eagle Cuda 300 Fish Finder & Scotty Rod Holders. The rod holder mounting system is interchangeable and provides for the ability to switch to optional down-rigger shown in photo. The actual rod shown on the X-Wing was demonstrated to us at a recent show in Toronto and is known as an Emmrod. It comes in a variety of configurations based on the fish you are targeting and is purportedly extremely sensitive and great for kayak fishermen. If anybody has ever tried one, we would be interested in your comments and reviews. The LED Lighting under the X-Wing is adjustable to shine forward, back and down into the cockpit, and can change to red and green for navigation lighting. The neck touch light is also adjustable and has a programmable "red" auto night function. It is excellent for tying lures or reading charts and can be adjusted to shine off port or starboard side.

BY ED ZIERALSKI, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2009 AT 12:01 A.M.
Fishing has slowed some due to changing seas, but there was a fair bite for yellowtail, white sea bass and thresher sharks off La Jolla last week.
Derek Grant and Pam and Bill Moore, aboard the boat Gut Barge, saw some of the action on Christmas Day. A kayaker, Wade Griffith of Riverside, had been fighting a huge fish for an hour before getting some assistance from Grant and the Moores.... Read full article

Proper Catch & Release of Musky, Pike and other Esox

Now I know these fish can be intimidating to a new angler but it is your responsibility to understand the proper techniques used in handling them if they are targeted by you and your friends. These fish often seem spunky and resilient but in fact they have a high mortality rate after release. There are different theories on a lot of this but these are based on my thoughts and experience:
Catch and Release with Esox: Without a net or cradle landing, an Esox species can be a bit of a task to manage safely for the fish. First off, make sure you have the tools you need to handle these fish.
Get yourself some long needle nose pliers to get into the depths of the mouth, hook cutters if they are buried deep and you cant get them out without killing the fish, jaw spreaders for emergency use only and a bit of courage to get up close and personal with these toothy critters. Now, you are going to have to take a good assessment of the hookset to see where the hooks are buried before attempting to land the fish. I try to grab the opposite side to the lure for obvious reasons. Here is the underneath of an esox.

Athabasca River Adventure

Navigating the Athabasca River in Northern Alberta
I would like to share with you my experience on the Athabasca River in northern Alberta. The Athabasca is the 13th longest river in Canada with a length of 1234 kilometres. After it was 'discovered' by Europeans, it became a major transportation waterway during the fur trade of the 1800's and later years, the forestry industry. Due to the importance and history of the river, it has been named an official Canadian Heritage River.
The Athabasca originates in the Rocky Mountains at the Columbia Icefields near the town of Jasper, Alberta. At the headwaters, the river ranges from a very slow, meandering, easy paddling stream to a raging, white-water experience for only the most advanced paddlers. My experience took place much further downstream near the city of Fort Mcmurray.
I was managing a fly-in fishing lodge on Lake Athabasca when we purchased a fleet of new aluminum boats and outboards. The boats were taken by tractor trailer up to Fort Mcmurray and delivered to our office on the shores of the Clearwater River; one of the estimated 80 tributaries of the Athabasca. From here, it was my job to assemble a crew and navigate the rivers up to Lake Athabasca, then across the lake to the old uranium mine site of Gunnar, just south of Uranium City. We had originally estimated this to take two longs days and hopefully one night......originally being key.

Add a tether strap of about 6-7 feet, and clip this to the side handle (with good knots at both ends). This is a good insurance policy, and also allows you to give a larger fish that is still "green" a little more room.
The BogaGrip allows you to safely release fish in the water with the tools noted above in the first comment, and keeps yours fingers away from those nasty teeth and sharp hooks.
